UKRAINE VS RUSSIA – THE MISSING FACTS

Lately, many US journalists, political pundits, and government officials have offered their assessment of the Ukraine/Russia situation. But their assessments seem devoid of incontrovertible historical fact. These are the relevant facts.

First, with the fall of the former USSR, thousands of Russian nuclear warheads were abandoned in Ukraine. Russia demanded said nuclear arsenal back. Ukraine wanted to retain the missiles for defense, primarily against Russia. Britain and America intervened. Britain and America cajoled Ukraine into letting Russia have its missiles back with their promises to guarantee Ukraine’s borders. Yet when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, US President Obama and Britain failed to honor this agreement. They let Russia annex the Crimea. When you wonder why Ukraine and other countries hate Americans, remember this; Our government’s betrayals such as this are transferred to individual average Americans. Is this the reputation WE THE PEOPLE want?

Secondly, then as now, Russia defends its actions by saying the areas of Ukraine involved requested to rejoin the Russian Federation. Initially, Russia downplayed or omitted mentioning these regions had majority Russian populations, leaving the uninformed to believe ethnic Ukrainians voted to rejoin Russia. And, later justified their actions as rescuing their Russian Brethren. Worse, now some US government officials and Mainstream Media endorse Russia’s narrative.

But this representation fails to disclose the horrific means by which Russians became a majority in Ukraine. Ukraine was first subjugated by Russia in 1922. In the 1930s Stalin killed millions of Ukrainians during the Holodomor famine-genocide of the early 1930s. To consolidate his control of Ukraine, Stalin then encouraged Russians to move there. Russian Leader Stalin killed 7-10 Million Ukrainians and replaced them with Russian immigrants. Russia’s 2014 invasion and annexation involved southern Ukraine. Such evil deeds cannot be sanctioned and rewarded by letting excuse itself by saying its only helping areas of Ukraine with Russian majorities. It is tough for America to claim the moral high ground and lay claim to being leader of the free world when our leaders and Mainstream Media renege on their promises and turn their backs on Democratic Principles.
